The mission of the English Learner Education (ELE) Department for Andover Public Schools PreK-12 is to empower English Learners (ELs) to achieve timely and effective English proficiency by providing systematic, explicit, and sustained academic language development.
The English Learner Education Department at Andover Public Schools is dedicated to empowering Multilingual Learners through rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that fosters both academic achievement and language proficiency. Our direct English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction utilizes High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM)—including the Vista Higher Learning curriculum—fully integrated with the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework to systematically build vocabulary, syntax, and discourse skills. Within our Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classrooms, content teachers embed explicit language supports so students access grade-level curriculum alongside their peers. We regularly measure language growth through the annual ACCESS assessment and district measures, ensuring students reach key milestones toward reclassification as Former English Learners (FELs) and receive four years of ongoing progress monitoring post-exit. Through active partnership with our English Learner Parent Advisory Council (ELPAC) and Family Welcome Center, we ensure our families are informed, engaged, and empowered collaborators in their children's educational journey.
