West Middle School Families,
Andover middle schools’ phase 3 remote learning schedule and plan will begin on May 4, 2020. Two of the changes with this transition are slight modifications to our schedule and the use of ASPEN to provide families more feedback on assignments. Consistent with guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), we will continue to provide engaging instruction for our students focused on the content standards most critical for success in the next grade.
Individual student experience will vary depending on individual and family needs, access, capacity for remote learning, and the ongoing health of students, families and staff. We cannot possibly replicate the school day under these circumstances, nor can we expect parents to take on the role of their child’s teachers.
The changes to our schedule allow our Integrated Arts and World Language teachers opportunities to work with each grade at different times. Students and families can still expect posting of new experiences and access to teachers during the days and times in the schedule.
In response to what we have learned through phase 1 and 2, and in preparation for phase 3, we have developed a scale in ASPEN to reflect appropriate feedback for students and families. The goal was to use a system which is familiar to teachers, students and families. In addition, this scale will also guide next year’s teachers regarding student progress towards the learning targets established during this time. No effort or conduct grade will be assigned for term 3 and the legend below will be published with report cards.
P4 = Demonstrated evidence of exceeding learning target
P3 = Demonstrated evidence of meeting learning target
P2 = Some evidence of meeting learning target
P1 = No evidence of meeting learning target

We have also started working on our transition plans for our 5th and 8th grade students. We are forming two committees that will include administrators, teachers, and parents to come up with safe options to celebrate their achievements. We appreciate your cooperation as we approach the final phase to the 2019-20 school year.
