[ARCHIVED] Civil Rights Day

Andover High School’s Student Government Association hosts a Civil Rights Day every year in the Collins Center at AHS. The Civil Rights Day for this year will be on Thursday, April 7th , during the school day. This year, SGA’s theme is: “Rights Matter, Be Civil”. AHS SGA has planned a whole day of wonderful presentations about Civil Rights, and Bullying. During block one, AHS’s Improv Theatre class will be performing skits revolving around the two main ideas of the day, civil rights and bullying. There will be time allotted for the audience to express their thoughts and react to the presentation. During block two, Jeff Pyle will be visiting the students. He and his brother, Jonathon Pyle, were sent home for wearing “Coed Naked” and other T-shirts that schools officials deemed to be “vulgar”. They filed a lawsuit against their school’s dress code in 1993 for censoring students’ freedom of speech. He will be talking about his experience and Civil Rights in general. During block three, The Debate Club, lead by Mr. Rob Michaud, will be running three debates about the First Amendment, which says we have the freedom of religion, speech, and press, and the right to petition and assembly. During block four, a speaker from the Anti-Defamation League will be speaking to students about their civil rights and the issue of bullying. It is going to be a busy day in the Collins Center on Thursday, April 9th. It will be a great way for students to understand their rights. It will also be a good opportunity for the students to hear a little about the issue of bullying.
Remember, how do you know you’re wrong unless you know your rights? Rights matter! Be Civil!
