Dear APS families and staff,
As part of our ongoing priority of safety at our schools, last year, the district engaged Guidepost Solutions, LLC to provide a comprehensive school safety assessment. Guidepost has reviewed our existing security systems, security policies and procedures, and presented their findings at the December 7, 2023 School Committee meeting. During their assessment, they received input from public safety, school administration, staff, students, and families and completed a vulnerability assessment at all school buildings.
Their conclusions reinforce that as a community, we are invested in achieving the goal of a safe experience for our students, staff, and visitors. I am pleased with the results of Guidepost's findings, and the recommendations they presented to ensure that all members of our school community feel secure at our schools. Of note, they shared our strong commitment to visitor management at our schools and the active engagement of our leadership team to promote safe school buildings.
The survey results showed impressive engagement from our staff, families, and students. It is encouraging to see the overwhelming sense from the community of feeling safe on school campuses. The student responses are also positive; it’s clear they are engaged in preserving a safe learning environment.
Guidepost also provided some recommendations which the district, in partnership with the Andover Police Department, can implement to enhance our campuses. These include preserving school property for school-use only during the school day, adding additional wayfinding signage to direct visitors to the appropriate entry point at each school, and maintaining the strong control our staff has over main entry locations.
I recognize the trust our families place in the district when sending their children to school each day. I am appreciative of the community’s engagement to maintain and strengthen the safe environment we strive to foster in all our schools.
