AHS Senior Celebration at the Collins Center

Andover High School Senior Celebration

The Plan for Class of 2020

The goal of this plan is to create a plan to celebrate the accomplishments of our senior class in a safe, socially distanced but in-person way. We’d like to celebrate with you and your family now and in the future if possible.

What is described below is the start of a multi-step event for the 420+ members of the Andover High School Class of 2020 and those who love them.

Step 1:

On Tuesday May 12th staff will deliver personalized lawn signs and caps and gowns to seniors. We are doing this so that during the week of June 1st, each senior will have the opportunity to have a professional photograph taken of them crossing the stage at the Collins Center. This will allow students and families an opportunity to celebrate now during our traditional graduation season within the current guidelines of the state of Massachusetts and the town of Andover. It will not preclude us from holding an in-person graduation for the Class of 2020 later in the summer if that becomes a viable option.

Step 2:

Seniors will schedule an appointment to be filmed and photographed walking across the Collins Center stage. We are grateful to our colleagues at Hockmeyer Studios and AndoverTV for making this possible! Seniors are limited to 2 family members in attendance. All seniors and families must wear a mask or facial covering. Seniors will be able to remove their mask/facial covering when walking across the stage and being photographed.

Seniors, please schedule your appointment using this Sign Up Genius Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040B49AFA828A7FB6-senior

  • Tuesday June 2nd:            8:30AM -4:30PM
  • Wednesday June 3rd:       8:30AM -4:30PM

  • Friday June 5th:                8:30AM -4:30PM

Step 3:

It is important to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment in order to keep everyone socially distant and safe.

Seniors and families will first drive to the fieldhouse parking lot to drop off books, computers, and any other outstanding school obligations.  An administrator or staff member will meet you there.  At the same time students will also be given their cumulative school records, health records, the Class of 2020 senior class t-shirt and the 2020 Yearbook!

Step 4:

Families will then proceed in their vehicle to the Collins Center parking lot. Once in the Collins Center parking lot, there will be additional staff, and signage.  In the Collins Center, there will be additional to signage and arrows on the floor, staff will be onsite to direct seniors and families. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to wait in your car until the staff directs you to enter the Collins Center. Students will be directed to the stage and the parents will be directed to another entrance and have the opportunity to read their child’s name as they walk across the stage. After walking across the Collins Center stage, seniors and families should exit the auditorium and the building through the Collins Center main entrance doors.

Safety Precautions:

All staff will be provided with masks and gloves and will be required to wear them. Seniors and families are required to wear a mask or facial covering. Seniors may remove their mask/facial covering during filming and photography. All participants will have access to hand sanitizer stations.

The filming of seniors walking across stage will be done by AndoverTV and the Andover High School AHSNews team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we holding this senior celebration?

At this time, there is still a mandatory stay-at-home advisory in place in the state of Massachusetts, and the town of Andover has not allowed us to host a large scale event. Therefore, in order to offer students and families an opportunity to celebrate now during the graduation season, we have put forth this Senior Celebration plan. This plan does not preclude an in-person event later in the summer if it is allowed by state and local authorities and restrictions are lifted in a manner where it is safe to hold a large gathering.

Is this considered a graduation?

This is a celebration of our seniors with each senior and their family having an opportunity to be videotaped and photographed in their cap and gown during this traditional graduation season.  We continue to hold out hope for a large group in-person event later in the summer; however, with each change of venue and/or calendar delay (July, August, or later graduation ceremony), there is no guarantee that the large-gatherings ban will be lifted by this summer, and there is a risk of fewer students actually participating due to other life plans such as beginning employment, attending college, enlisting in the military, etc.

Will my senior have to wear a mask/facial covering when he/she walks across the stage or for the picture?

No. Seniors will be able to remove their mask or facial covering when their name is announced and they are filmed walking across the stage. Seniors will also not be photographed wearing a mask/facial covering. Families are required to wear masks or a facial covering once they have left their vehicle in compliance with Governor Baker’s order while inside the high school, and outside until they have returned to their vehicle. Videographers, photographers, and staff onsite will be wearing masks and/or facial coverings.

What does the 5-minute photo session include?

Seniors will have their name announced, be videotaped walking across the stage, have an official Senior Celebration photograph taken, and receive/pick up their diploma cover from a pedestal. Following the photo, the senior and their family will leave the Collins Center, exit the building, and return to their vehicle.

What if my senior does not want to participate?

It is not required that every student participate. It is our hope that our students will take this opportunity to have their name announced, have their picture taken and be videotaped as they walk across the Collins Center stage.

Why are only two family members allowed?

CDC/Massachusetts Department of Health guidance limits the number of people to no more than 10. With only the senior, two family members, the photographer, and our AHS staff present we will be able to meet all state and local guidelines.

What can the family members do during the time their child is on stage?

Families will have the opportunity to read the name of their child as they walk across the stage. Families are also welcome to take video or photographs of their child on stage.

What days and times will the in-person ceremonies take place?

  • Monday June 1st:           8:30AM -4:30PM
  • Tuesday June 2nd:         8:30AM -4:30PM
  • Wednesday June 3rd:     8:30AM -4:30PM
  • Thursday June 4th:         8:30AM -4:30PM
  • Friday June 5th:              8:30AM -4:30PM

It is important to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment in order to keep everyone socially distant and safe. Seniors and families will first enter the fieldhouse parking lot to drop off books, computers, and any other outstanding obligations. Seniors must schedule an appointment using Sign Up Genius by Thursday, May 21st at the following link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040B49AFA828A7FB6-senior

No senior will be permitted inside the high school without an appointment.

If for some reason, none of the appointment slots work for your family, please contact Mr. Conrad at philip.conrad@andoverma.us to discuss another arrangement to try and best accommodate your family.

Is there handicap parking available?

Yes. Park in the front of the building in the designated parking spots and use the Collins Center entrance. Someone will be there to let you in the building.

My child is not participating in the senior celebration. How can they get their diploma?

AHS will mail all diplomas when it has been decided whether a large group in-person graduation ceremony can be held. Reminder: Any outstanding obligations will need to be reconciled prior to a diploma being sent.

Can my graduate wear pins/sashes or decorate their mortarboard?

We encourage students to continue the Andover High School tradition of decorating their mortarboards with positive messages of thanks, gratitude, next steps, college and university logos, and the like. Gowns should not be adorned with pins or sashes other than those recognized by the school such as the top ten percent, national honor society, global scholars, etc. Anyone who decorates their gown will be asked to remove the decorations or they will not be permitted to participate in the senior celebration. This is the same policy as for our traditional commencement.
