West Middle School PAC Meeting

PAC Meeting April 10, 2008

8:30 A.M.

Special Guests: Tony James, School Board Member, Deb Downes, new Asst. Principal, Becky Franks, temporary Director of Special Needs for West Middle School

Tony James:

Update on Budget: Article 4 will be a vote of the town and school budget  Three different scenerios have been put forth:

        a) Selectmen recommends the available revenue of $58.6 mill with a $2.1 mill deficit

        b) Finance Committee recommends $58.84 mill with a $1.9 mill deficit

        c) School Committee recommends $60.745 mill

The School Committee was asked to go back and reprioritize the budget:

-What will have the least impact on the students

-What else has changed since the budget was established - any new retirees or leaves of absences??

"Serious prospect that we will not reach agreement before Town Meeting on April 30th"  Tony James

The Finance Committee and the Selectmen recommends the Override.  The School Committee does not and they believe four key items need to be

put in place in order for an override to take place:

        1) An incredible and robust three year fiscal plan

        2) Every board member endorse the three year plan

        3) All boards be fully active in educating the public  about the risks and rewards of the override

        4) Time to do the education

According to the School Committee none of the above is in place.

Principal Steve Murray explained how this would affect WMS:

WMS is asking for a seventh grade Social Studies teacher.  If we don't get one we will be in violation of the No Child Left  Behind mandate.

WMS is also asking for $125,000 to put the Excel Program in place for five special needs students who will be coming to WMS next year.

Although it seems like a lot up front it will save between $50,000 to $60,000 per student if they are placed in private schools.

If WMS has to reduce it would be "professional support personal".

A letter home to the parents will be sent by Steve this Friday

Other happenings at WMS from Steve:

The faculty is working together and sharing differentiation techniques through classroom visits and observation.  A "vertical " model has been set in place

to accomplish this.

Team Time:  What is happening during team times?  Community Service oriented projects have been put in place.  Projects that have been done are

"Mix It Up Day", "Take a Stand" , "Home For the Troops", "No Bullying".  WMS would like to include Jr. Achievement and the local store Mountain Moore offers hikes, nature walks etc.

Career Day, and maybe getting some senior citizens to WMS to volunteer.

Fund Raising Efforts: Tracy Callahan has done extensive research on the flocking fundraiser.  She will continue to work on this to see if it is possible to have this be a spring fundraiser.
