According to federal and State laws, Limited English Proficient (LEP) students must be tested each year.
The MEPA (Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment R/W) measures students' progress in reading and writing. This test is given to students in grades 3-12. In the spring, it is given to all third grade LEP students as well as any new LEP students in Andover.
The MELA-O (Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment - Oral) is a rubric used to assess students' listening comprehension and speaking production skills for grades K-12.
LEP students must also take part in the MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System). The English Language Arts MCAS is optional for LEP students in their first year of schooling in the United States. LEP students may use an approved bilingual dictionary during the MCAS.
