Message from Dr. Claudia Bach on
Expanded Learning Time (ELT)
I
am pleased to announce that we have taken the first steps to explore
redesigning and expanding learning time at Bancroft, High Plain,
Sanborn, Shawsheen, South, and Wood Hill Middle Schools. Please be
clear, no decision has been made to lengthen the school schedule at this
time; our planning committee of teachers, administrators, parents,
students, and other stakeholders will simply allow us to research this
option for our schools. The current class of expanded learning
time districts has found that this exercise is not just about adding
hours to the school clock, but about redesigning the school day.
These schools have increased time for experiential learning in core
academic subjects, added enrichment and physical education
opportunities, and more planning time for teachers. Increased time for
hands-on learning and class projects in math, science, English Language
Arts and social studies. Expanded time can provide children with
enrichment classes like music, art, drama and physical education that
stir their creativity and stimulate a love of learning. Each
participating school will hold faculty and parent information sessions;
I know this is a new idea for this community and we understand there are
many factors to consider so we ask that you keep an open mind and
participate in this process with us. I welcome your thoughts and
ideas and look forward to updating you on the planning committee’s
progress.
