Message from the School Committee & Dr. Berman

At the October 15th meeting, the Andover School Committee announced that they have accepted the resignation of Superintendent Sheldon Berman, who has provided steadfast leadership to the Andover Public Schools for more than five years. He will remain in his role through December 31, 2020, providing support for an effective transition.

“We are grateful for the leadership Dr. Berman has provided our schools including, most recently, the successful launch of the 2020-21 school year under challenging COVID-19 restrictions,” said School Committee Chairperson Shannon Scully. “Since his arrival, Dr. Berman has grown Andover’s reputation as a top district in the state, guided teams of committed educators, and developed many innovative opportunities for students.”

“I have asked the School Committee to accept my resignation in order to relocate back to the Pacific Northwest, where my wife has accepted a new position,” adds Dr. Sheldon Berman. “I very much appreciate my tenure in Andover. It is a wonderful community and an exceptional school district. The district is gifted with incredibly talented and dedicated administrators, teachers and staff who have been a joy to work with. I’m proud of the leadership I have been able to provide and I will miss the people with whom I have had the privilege to work.”

The Committee will meet next week to consider steps for selecting an interim superintendent to lead the district after Dr. Berman’s departure.   Additionally, the Committee will discuss launching an extensive search for a new, permanent superintendent, with the intention to fill that position for July 1, 2021. This effort may include issuing an RFP to contract a search firm to lead a recruitment process that incorporates comprehensive feedback and engagement from the community.

“Andover is a high-performing, well-run district in a strongly supportive community with some of the best educators in the country,” adds Scully. “We are optimistic Andover will attract high caliber superintendent candidates and we are looking forward to finding an excellent fit for our district.”
