School Committee votes to extend superintendent's contract

I want to let you know that earlier tonight the School Committee voted to extend Dr. Sheldon Berman’s contract as superintendent of the Andover Public Schools by two years. Dr. Berman’s current contract was set to expire on June 30, 2020. With this extension, his contract will conclude on June 30, 2022, at which time Dr. Berman plans to retire after nearly 30 years as a superintendent.

The School Committee carefully considered many issues in deciding whether to extend Dr. Berman’s contract and received a wide range of input from a broad section of the community. In the end, we focused on what would be best for the District’s students. We believe that, under Dr. Berman’s leadership these past four years, the District’s educational program has positively advanced in multiple areas and we wanted this work to continue beyond the current end-date of the contract. We anticipate that a search for a new superintendent will commence in the fall of 2021.

We thank you for your support of our schools and wish you a safe, peaceful and enjoyable remainder of your summer.

Joel Blumstein, Chair
