Medical experts advising the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) have stated the greater the physical distancing the better, but that the minimum acceptable distance is three feet, when in combination with face coverings and other measures. Establishing a minimum physical distance of three feet between students when face coverings are worn is informed by evidence and substantiated by guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization. DESE’s guidance is a physical distance of 3 feet minimum, with 6 feet encouraged.

In addition to maintaining physical distance, a number of health and safety protocols will be required by DESE. Masks will be required for students in grades 2-12, and optional for PK-1 grade.

The district submitted the APS Feasibility Study with all three components for review to DESE on July 31st. No final decision has been determined.

In preparation for the Return to School plan submission to DESE, our school administrators and staff measured and set up classrooms with the minimum acceptable distance of three (3) feet between students. Below are examples of what classrooms might look like.
