MCAS Report 2017

Reporting from tests taken Spring 2017

English Language Arts

Next Generation MCAS is presented as the proportion of students who scored in the top two categories (Meet or Exceed expectations) for students in grades 3 – 8. Legacy MCAS is presented as the proportion of students who scored in the top two categories (Advanced or Proficient) for students in grade 10. Results are presented for Andover (in blue) and comparable districts or the state average (orange/red).

Grade 3-8 ELA District Comparison (M+E %)
Grade 10 ELA District Comparison (M+E %)

The graphs below show performance for all students and indicated student subgroups, including students with disabilities (SWD), state-defined economically disadvantaged students, high needs students (includes any student who fits into the SWD, Econ Dis, or ELL subgroups), students receiving Title I services, English language learners (ELL), students who were previously ELL, or ever ELL. A subgroup is not shown for a grade band if there were too few students in that group to present a result. Andover students outperform those in the state for almost all subgroups. Gap analysis shows the difference between performance by the indicated student subgroup as compared with all students. For example, 19% of students with disabilities met or exceeded expectations, versus 63% of all students; the difference between 63% and 19% is a gap of 44%. The goal is for students in subgroups to ultimately attain the same performance as all students in the district. Gaps do decrease by grade 10. Comparing Legacy MCAS performance over the past four years; there is a slight positive improvement trend.

Grade 3-5 ELA Subgroup & Gap Analysis (M+E %)
Grade 6-8 ELA Subgroup & Gap Analysis (M+E %)
Grade 10 ELA Subgroup & Gap Analysis (A+P %)
Grade 10 ELA Performance over Time

Students in racial subgroups differ from one another in the proportion who meet or exceed expectations. Differences are smaller in grade 10.

Math

Next Generation MCAS is presented as the proportion of students who scored in the top two categories (Meet or Exceed expectations) for students in grades 3 – 8. Legacy MCAS is presented as the proportion of students who scored in the top two categories (Advanced or Proficient) for students in grade 10. Results are presented for Andover and the state average.

Grade 3-8 Math District Comparison
Grade 10 Math District Comparison

The graphs below show performance for all students and indicated student subgroups for which there were enough students to show a result. Andover students outperform those in the state for almost all subgroups. Gap analysis shows the difference between performance by the indicated student subgroup as compared with all students. The goal is for students in subgroups to ultimately attain the same performance as all students in the district. Gaps do decrease by grade 10. Comparing Legacy MCAS performance over the past four years; there is a slight positive improvement trend.

Grade 6-8 Math Subgroup & Gap Analysis (M+E %)
Grade 10 Math Subgroup & Gap Analysis (A+P %)
Grade 10 Math Performance over Time

Students in racial subgroups differ from one another in the proportion who meet or exceed expectations. Differences are smaller in grade 10.

Grade 3-5 Math Subgroups (M+E %)
Grade 6-8 Math Subgroups (M+E %)
Grade 10 Math Subgroups (A+P %)

Science

Legacy MCAS is presented as the proportion of students who scored in the top two categories (Advanced or Proficient) at each grade level (Grades 5, 8 and 10). Results are presented for Andover (in blue) and comparable districts or the state average (orange/red). Note that the results from grade 10 are the composite of students taking the Legacy MCAS in physical sciences in grade 9, or biology in grade 10. Students took these courses under the old schedule and might have taken a fall semester course prior to spring testing.

Grade 5 Science District Comparison (A+P %)
Grade 8 Science District Comparison (A+P %)
Grade 10 Science District Comparison (A+P %)

The graphs below show performance for all students and indicated student subgroups for which there were enough students to show a result. Andover students outperform those in the state for all subgroups. Gap analysis shows the difference between performance by the indicated student subgroup as compared with all students. The goal is for students in subgroups to ultimately attain the same performance as all students in the district. Gaps do decrease by grade 10.

Grade 5 Science Subgroup & Gap Analysis (A+P %)
Grade 8 Science Subgroup & Gap Analysis (A+P %)
Grade 10 Science Subgroup & Gap Analysis (A+P %)

Students in racial subgroups differ from one another in the proportion who meet or exceed expectations. Differences are smaller in grade 10.

Grade 5 Science Subgroups (A+P %)
Grade 8 Science Subgroups (A+P %)
Grade 10 Science Subgroups (A+P %)

Legacy MCAS performance can be compared over the past four years (2014 – 2017). Students meeting expectations (A+P %) has a slight negative (Grades 5 & 8) or slight positive (Grade 10) but not significant trend over the period indicated. Student performance by graduating class in Science and Tech/Eng shows that tests vary in difficulty from year to year. Note that performance in grade 10 is a composite of students taking the physical sciences test in their freshman spring and a smaller number of students taking biology in their sophomore spring. From 2014 – 2016 students at AHS studied under the old block schedule.
